Technical tours

We are currently in the process of updating technical tours for Wednesday morning until lunchtime (19/06/2024). These tours offer firsthand experiences of the latest innovations in technology, from labs to advanced manufacturing and water/wastewater facilities.
Please note that there will be a limited number of seats available for each tour.

There are five different exciting technical tours planned:

General practical information for the technical tours can be found further down the page.

BIOFOS

BIOFOS is Denmark’s largest wastewater utility, treating the wastewater from 1.2 million inhabitants in the Copenhagen metropolitan area at three treatment plants Lynetten, Avedøre, and Damhusåen. Wastewater is treated at the BIOFOS treatment plants before being discharged into Øresund and Køge Bugt.

We will visit the water treatment facilities located in Avedøre in the South-West of Copenhagen, and learn about hot topics such as their process of recovering energy from wastewater, how they handle environmentally hazardous substances, and the issues in relation to nitrous oxide, N2O

Hillerød Utility Company

Hillerød wastewater treatment plant, Denmark’s first fully covered plant, retains building site values, a common issue for ordinary plants. The cover maintains a uniform temperature year-round, improving the working environment and helping the plant blend with nature, benefiting local residents.

Commissioned in 2018, the plant treats both industrial and household wastewater, releasing treated water into a natural source. It uses physical, chemical, and biological processes, including advanced pre-clarification and continuous de-ammonification with annamox biomass, meeting strict municipal discharge requirements.

By 2026, the treated wastewater will be near drinking water quality, cleaner than the stream it discharges into, positively affecting Pøle Å, Arresø, and Roskilde Fjord’s water environments.

We will make our way to the charming town of Hillerød where we will visit the wastewater treatment plant servicing the city and surrounding industry.

The Climate Adaptation Tour of Copenhagen

Copenhagen is the first city to have implemented a Cloudburst plan to ensure extreme rain events are properly handled. We will go on a walk around the city and see the very subtle but effective solutions!

We will be taking a stroll around the Klimakvarter in Østerbro, a climate-resilient neighbourhood. The focus in this area has been on both futureproofing and simultaneously creating a green inner-city residential space that is pleasant to experience.

After that, we will take public transport to Enghaveparken, a lovely park that houses quite a surprise beneath the surface. Through the park, we will learn how Copenhagen is addressing events such as cloudbursts and heavy rain while combining these efforts with recreational areas.

Lastly, we will visit Carlsberg City. The former home of the large brewing company has undergone a significant infrastructural and architectural makeover. As much of this district is new, climate resilience solutions could be integrated from the start.

Practical Information

We have gathered general practical information about the tours and surrounding them here:

Luggage

The technical tours will begin early Wednesday morning. You might have to take your luggage with you at checkout in case your hotel does not wish to guard it for you.

Usually, if you ask, they can  keep your luggage for later, but in case this is not possible, you can pay for storing luggage at the Central Station (Hovedbanegården).

Follow this link to see how- and where to store luggage at the Central Station: Luggage and service

Bus Pick-up point

For some of the venues which are further away we will provide a bus.

The pick-up point for the buses is close to the DI-venue. You can see when you should be there under the programme.
